Your letter of July 9 came while I was absent from the city, and [[strikethrough]] has caused delay in [[/strikethrough]] consequently my answer has been delayed.

I have been greatly interested in the [[[strikethrough]] scheme you present [[/strikethrough]] [[?]] of in your letter and I think I [[strikethrough]] am [[/strikethrough]] visualize the "purpose" you express in the Prologue, which I like very much, but, I do not follow [[strikethrough]] clearly [[/strikethrough]] your plan further clearly [[?]].  You speak of "Sacred Objects at rest," "[[?Stage]] directions" etc. [[strikethrough]] therefore [[/strikethrough]] I am therefore confused as to your [[strikethrough]] intent [[/strikethrough]]plan, but will await your next letter & [[strikethrough]] therefore [[/strikethrough]] say no more at present.

I have just reread the abbreviated account of the Hako published in "The Path of the Rainbow." [[strikethrough]] In [[/strikethrough]]  The preface [[strikethrough]] we are told [[/strikethrough]] states that "[[?Space]] did not permit" the presentation of the Hako in [[?fall/full]].  [[strikethrough]] Sometimes [[/strikethrough]]  The cutting was sometimes unfortunate, as for instance in the first song, where only four stanzas [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] out of the thirteen are given.  So this song is in its structure a masterpiece [[strikethrough]] in its structure [[/strikethrough]] and [[strikethrough]] gives [[/strikethrough]] [[?]] a the key to the entire ceremony, [[strikethrough]] its loss as [[/strikethrough]] being a preview to meet the purpose & meaning of the song is lost, is to be regretted.  I appreciate however the difficulties [[strikethrough]] regarding space, [[/strikethrough]] that confronted the Editor, regarding space.

I have also reread Prof. H.B. Alexander's "Mystery of Life.  In the Introduction, [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] Prof. Alexander calls attention to the fundamental charter of the appeals in The Hako, which are the cries of humanity searching for God.  Cries that [[strikethrough]] have educed [[/strikethrough]] through the Ages.  [[strikethrough]] Searching through [[/strikethrough]]  [[?Educed]] in Egypt [[strikethrough]] through [[/strikethrough]] Greece and [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] Ancient America.  This indicated in the Introduction broad [[?work]] looks as well worth while, but in the drama [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] that follows, the writer has undertaken [[strikethrough]] a difficult [[/strikethrough]] an almost impossible task.  A task the difficulties of which he has [[strikethrough]] shown [[/strikethrough]] indicated in his carefully prepared [[?]] [[?]] given in the Introduction.  The Hako is replete with symbolism and therefore does not easily itself to a sustained literary production.

On p. 279 of the Hako vol. I quote [[?Maquettes]] observation in 1672 of the power exercised by the "[[?Laluonets]]" over fighting warriors.  Two hundred years later Indians spoke to me of the reverence still shown to symbolic "Pipes," for in their presence anger need not be expressed by look, word or deed.

I can therefore bear witness that time had not [[?toridered]] the potency of the Hako.
