I am in receipt of your telegram of the 4th inst. [[strikethrough]] for which I am very thankful, [[/strikethrough]] saying that unless I send my accounts soon you were afraid the Treasurer will not pass my requisition, for [[strikethrough]] money [[/strikethrough]] which please accept my thanks.

In reply I have to say that in compliance with your letter dated [[blank]] I worked on my accounts for the 2nd 3rd & 4th qrs 1883 and completed them two days ago and forwarded them immediately thereafter. [[strikethrough]] I hope you will pardon the delay but it was on account [[/strikethrough]] I have not heretofore sent in my financial report because of my understanding that I was not to render any accounts until my return to Washington after the completion of the work allotted to me here.
