together with the agricultural possibilities of this Valley led to his selecting Lapwai as the place to establish his mission.  The tract marked by dotted lines on the map already referred to, shows the old site where he built his house, mission, & church, opened up a farm and established the first printing press west of the Rocky Mts. in the territory claimed by the U. S. Lot.1. Sec. 22 was the camping of Indians who were being taught gardening by object lessons.  Lot 2. was the field where each Indian was given a small patch to work upon before he ventured to raise potatoes and other vegetables or to put in wheat.  Mr Spalding being the first to bring these things to the Nez Perce.  Their field ^[[used]] for instruction was enclosed for Agency purpose by Agent Hutchins and he also enclosed the old camping ground on Lot 1. and a portion of the unsurveyed tract bordering "the boom" to the East of Lot 1.  The graveyards where Mr Spalding and a number of white persons and Indian ^[[are buried]] has always been enclosed within these
