Nez Perce
July 6.

Hon. Comm'r of Ind. Affs.

Sir:
Since writing my letter reporting upon the case of Mrs Julia Cox, ^[[I hear]] there is proposed to get up a petition ^[[in her behalf]] and secure signatures in the tribe. As Indians frequently sign papers knowing little of their import. I would respectfully request that for the sake of the future welfare and good name of the Indians and the government, that any petition touching the case of Mrs Cox or Mrs Fairfield which may be sent to Washington should be forwarded to me for verification of the signatures in open council. I make this request because I am confident that these people ^[[Mrs Cox and Mrs Fairfield's children cannot fasten themselves upon these Indians except through some unfair methods.

Respectfully
