In the Field, Nez Perce Res. Idaho.
July 27, 1889.

Mr E. O'Neill
Lewiston Idaho.

Dear Sir:
Owing to my wanderings your letter of July 18, has but just reached me & I hasten to reply.

I sent on the original to the Hon. Commissioner, with a full statement of all that had passed between us. I retained the copy for reference but since you desire it I return that to you. You can in all probability secure the return of the original from the Hon. Commissioner of Indian Affairs. I think I wrote you that unless I was authorized by the Dept. I could not accept service. You know I am under orders, and not my own master in this matter

I did not think you seeking any advantage. I was obliged to refer the papers to the Department.

Respectfully
