The Nez Perce are practically a Christian people. They have four native churches, ministered by native pastors. These men were trained by Miss S. L. MacBeth, and to this lady and her sister Miss Kate McBeth not only the Indians but the entire country owes a debt of gratitude for their remarkable work bearing ^[[some of ?]] most noteworthy results it has ever been my good fortune to meet.

The people are orderly and industrious, and tractable. They are naturally religious, and quiet, and they offer a most promising field for the teacher, and the friends who would labor for the welfare of the Indian. They are interested in their allotment and taking their land as rapidly as I can get it surveyed and can grade it. I have over 400 names upon my registry, and several thousand acres allotted, and this in the face of difficulties that at one time seemed truly formidable. For the Nez Perce are a sensible people, and only need to understand the law to gladly obey it.

With cordial regard,
Yours sincerely
