My dear Mr. Morgan

The echos of the Mohonk Conference have just reached me in these wilds, and I hasten to add my word to the universal commendation that must have greeted the Commissioner on every hand for his wise and timely address upon Indian Education. It covered the ground and that is saying much, for as the Commis remarks, the Indian tribes are not all on the same plane of social advance, and [[strikethrough]] again [[/strikethrough]] I may add, the individuals in a tribe are equally diverse in their attainment toward civilization, and their capacity to accept it. The words of the Commis. are strong and courageous, and by their honest statement have thrown down the gauntlet to the political faction that have been all along the little foxes, that have hindered & well nigh destroyed good governmental work. I anticipate a hard time for you, hard battles with politicians, but I trust that honest public opinion will be strong enough to silence catfish councils and permit the Commis. to have power to act, and carry out his plans. He is right.
