We have met with quite a loss in the failure of the health of our good chainman [[Crowley Spencer?]]. He is a [[Chemana?]] boy who chained so well last year that he was promised a place this year. He rode 70 miles to meet me on my arrival at the Agency last April, and stood ready for work. He took cold last winter, and the hard labor of chaining during May and June of this year, increased his cough to such a degree that it became needful he should give up all attempt to work longer. His courage during his suffering and unflinching faithfulness even when in weakness & distress, [[reached?]] his [[sterling?]] worth of Christian character, and deepens the hope that his life may be spared to benefit his people.

We have been short handed, owing to the season of the harvest field, but I look for my men back next week. Meanwhile we are getting on as well as makeshifts will permit, so all landmarks are lost even the retracing of lines in a new survey, and kept all the men busy chaining, building and flagging, etc.

I have made 56 allotments, in whole or in part in the west side of the valley, all requiring more or less negociations, and adjustments.
