heavy stone for permanent corners. The other tribe I have allotted have always willingly done this work. The Nez Perce have failed to perform this task though urged to it. There are honorable exceptions, but they are unfortunately exceptions.

I would therefore ask you to [[strikeout]]please explain to the people the need [[/strikeout]] ^[[take such measures as you deem best to impress upon the Indians the necessity]] of making their corners permanent; of fencing their allotments as soon as possible, while the lines are still fresh in their memory; and where fencing of placing their posts along the lines of the survey so as not to deviate from a straight course from one corner to another.

[[Strikeout entire paragraph]] I sincerely hope you will be able to secure the proper preservation of the allotment work. It is not just to the faithful services which have been rendered by the Surveyer, nor to my own work, that the responsibility of improper fencing or the neglect of making permanent corners, should act upon us.[[/strikeout]]

Respectfully
