get the animal out or to make it possible to put the bundle in -  The shell is not worn except by handling.  that is, it is not water worn. has not lain in a bank & marked with waves.  It is not yet identified Prof. P. takes it today or tonight to Prof. Hyalt the great authority on Molusks.  It is doubtful whether it can be told just where it came from.  It is a fresh water bivalve. & of a very large type. & these are found all over the Western Country.  I shall try to find out all I can.
The contents of the shell was wrapped between two small mats or pieces of mat. one coarse weaving the other much finer.  We have found one selvage but no more.
