During the Civil War in England. at the time of Cromwell Gloucester was a stronghold of the peoples party as against the King & lords. In fact, at one time the whole struggle with Charles I was dependent on the fate of Gloucester. The Kings troops beseiged the city. It was then a walled city. The people held on until help came from London & the seige was raised. Just within the walls the protestants, the non-conforments, had a good church but they tore it down for it prevented the defense of the city it formed a walk for the beseiging army It is no rebuilt. I saw it. Gloucester was an important place when the Romans were in England. It commanded a force on the river and also the approach to Wales. I saw the remains of the old Roman wall. it is as firm today as it was at first when built nearly 2000 years ago. The old Roman streets still remain & form the present streets, there is a crossing in the center of the the old city and the streets tell what the crossing of roads stood for.
