Yesterday I was out to a tea given by a lady living near here, a Mrs Frank. her husband is a very delightful man and he is in sympathy with this movement which is really a moral movement. He works to try & make headway against the liquor traffic which is killing the people. From him I learned some startling facts. [[strikethrough]] You cant [[/strikethrough]] The officials can't close a "public house", a drinking place, no matter how bad it is, except the "Brewing Company which furnishes the liquor is paid for the loss of trade. It seems that the great liquor manufacturers are quite corporations & the stock is owned by the the Lords & rich people, & poor people too. On the success in making people drink lies the success in dividends. So when one tries to curtail drunkenness one strikes at the income of those who make the laws in Parliament. You see how difficult is reform here.
