My dear Francis

The heat, 97° yesterday, has made me ill I cannot go out or do much.  Dora is also sick, so matters are therefore troublesome.  The outside of the house is covered with scaffolds and this necessitates the outside blinds being open, adding to our discomfort this hot weather for the windows must be closed for safety's sake at night.  I am sorry for this inconvenience to Mrs Cushing, as well as to myself, but it cannot be helped.  It is all quite trying, but must be met.

Some points occur to me that make me think I had better write you rather than wait until your return. [[Roman numeral]] I [[/Roman numeral]]  I think it quite important that you get copies of all designs known or used among the Osage.  They should be studied when we have their symbolism [[insert]] and can see [[/insert]] what they stand for among the people.  Do they paint any designs on shields, on any articles they use?- Are designs confined to tattooing?  Can anyone give you the designs woven on the old mat cases?-  The ritual
