My dear Francis

I have just had a talk with Mr. Hodge over the phone. He says that the time you take to look over the material in Chicago & Pittsburgh should come out of the Bureau time. I said you would take these places on your way home, so that there would not be expense except as to the time, he said I was to tell you so.  You could take Bureau time for that work, not your time. Therefore if you start earlier & take the time on your journey home for your examination in Chicago & Pittsburgh that time will not count on your leave. Such being the case can't you start earlier so as to get home say Saturday July 1, or Friday night June 30th? We need time to talk over things, & if you come on the 3d, the next day is a holiday & you cant see Mr. Hodge then. Still I will not interfere but I'd like you home as soon as you can come. I want you [[insert]] while [[/insert] in Chicago to go & see the Omaha pipe. Make an outline drawing of it, so that you will have its exact size & can compare it with
