My dear Francis

Yesterday I saw Mr Hodge and had a talk with him about various matters of importance and I took the opportunity to speak of your leave and the ceremony you wish to see, & which may occur in July. Mr. Hodge said "Write and tell him to stop and see any ceremony, and not to bother about the date of his leave. When he is ready he can take it and after he gets here to Washington or where-ever or whenever his leave begins let him then write and make the statement when he wants it. A man doing scientific work cannot be tied down to petty rules. Of course in a great institution here in Washington where there are many persons to have leave the dates must be fixed & cannot well be changed, but he is in the field and his movements do not
