I wrote you of my interview with Mrs [[S?]] a very pleasant surprise.

At this moment Mary hands me the long looked for letter of Mr Guthrie.I am inclined to think his coming here is doubtful. I must answer it, & so will not enclose it in this letter, but as matters turn, I am inclined to think that I will not arrange to see him here. But as you will be gone until the ^Sunday^ 22nd - that gives you 20 days for there are four 1/2 Saturdays & Labor Day making 4 days off. I am inclined to go to Mrs Thaws next week. It is very hot now and very trying. I will think the matter over carefully. Perhaps we will go to New York for a few days so use up your leave. All this is too hasty so I will hold this letter until tomorrow & think it over write to Mr. [[Burton?]] & decide & then enclose the letter to you

Friday A.M. Dear F. It is a hot muggy morning and I slept last night the night before was a terrible night. It is very trying weather and I am glad you are out of the city. Hot noisy crowded and uncomfortable. I returned Dr. Dall's biography of S.P. Baird ^to the library last eve^, which I read with much interest.
