My dear M,
I rather expected a letter from you this morning but got none. 

Yesterday I opened the Ka-wa-xo-dse pack and found it to contain the most interesting things of any that I have yet secured. The wa-xo be itself is a beautiful reed whistle with a carrying strap made of otter skin. The strap was tied to the whistle with a narrow band of woven vegetable fibre dyed a brownish yellow with small white beads strung on the threads. [[strikethrough]] In the same deerskin case was a bunch of bits of scalps and I suspect that it had at one time been attacked [[/strikethrough]] The whistle had a beautiful tone. I blew it and it gave the eagle cry so i shall have good luck. It is said that when it refuses to sound the blower will have bad luck.

But the most interesting thing in the pack is a little black pipe with a long reed stem. The bowl
