My dear M.

I did not go to Pawhuska after all. Old man Thon-'ge-mon-ir came and got to talking with me until the train went by. Then he went to town and came back again, staying all night. I am glad this happened because I have the buffalo hunting custom defined. There is not the elaborate ceremony that there is among the Omaha but it is interesting nevertheless. Only four men control the whole thing and it seems to have worked to the satisfaction of all. It is very simple. This convinces me that the hunting rites were taken away when the Omahas departed and made quite a hole in the mass of rites. The old man also pointed out to me the constellation they call "The Three Deer". It was a very clear night so that the stars stood right out in their plans. I think it is the constellation you call, Orion. I will make a little chart of it for you here. [[image: line drawing, diamond shape outline with three dots from top point to left half point, one dot at right half point, two small dots vertically at bottom point]] The three big stars are the Three Deer. The two small stars that are on the line are called, Mi-Ka'-K'e U-ki-tha-c'in', double star, and they are the ones that are tattooed on the foreheads of the women. It is the mate of the Three Deer. The Three Deer, spoken of as one is male, and the double star female. The single star at the right seems to have no significance. The old man has left so I have been writing my notes of the things he has been telling me. I have also been reading the Times which you sent me.

My cold is almost well. I can breathe more
