THE NEEDLE MOUNTAINS and Colorado River, Arizona.  Next to the Columbia, the Colorado River is the principal American tributary to the Pacific.  It was discovered in 1540 by Alarcon, who ascended at a considerable distance from the Gulf of California and later in the same year one of Coronado's lieutenants reached it overland from New Mexico.
