I went to the Academy Mr. Baker was very cordial and he showed me the hide. It must have  been a beautiful skin at one time and perfectly white shells were on it, just as the old man had described it. To my astonishment & delight there was the pipe, but without the stem. That is not so important. The shape of the pipe was like this.

I haven't got the drawing quite straight but it will give you a general idea of what the thing is like. 

Where the finger point is the whole for the stem and the tobacco bowl is about in the middle of the conventional ornamentation of a buffalo track. The pipe perhaps was before the hide but of that we will discuss later. Baker promises to use his influence to have Mr. S. send it to Peabody where he says it surely ought to be.
