| Oct 14 1865 | Greensboro NC |Capt W C Mills 128 Ind Vol | 10 | 90 | 230 | 330 | 265 |   | 69 |   | 4 | 65 |   | 3518 |   | $9 | $5 | $7 |   |   |   |   | We have made no written Contracts ^[[insert]] but [[/insert]] by our advice there has been a great many Contracts made some for One third of the Crop where the Freedmen furnishes their own provisions and some for One fourth where the owner of the Land furnishes everything  there is a considerable demand for men at about Ten Dollars per Month  The Freedmen are anxious to make Contracts for the next Season  The people here apear to be oposed to makeing written Contracts as they have never been in the habit of doing so  I have a considerable Number Sick and as their is no Surgeon asigned us I have to hire a Citizen Doctor to attend on them  

The Society of Friends have established a School here and it is progressing finely there is Three Lady Teachers here in [[town?]] and Two at Deep River  Our School commenced near town with over One Hundred Schollars and I think it will soon reach over Two Hundred Schollars the school at Deep River has about Thirty Scholars We opened a Sabath School and had over Two Hundred Scholars  the Citizens do not take any part in this but try to discourage it but I think with a little perseverance our Schools will be the best in the State  We will commence a night School for the Benefit of those that cannot atend in the day time |

NOTE I. - In the Column of Remarks give all facts of interest or importance in relation to the Freedmen, and the practical workings of the Bureau, particularly in relation to the Contract System, whether there is an increasing desire on the part of Freedmen to obtain work, or the contrary, temper of the people in reference to Freedmen, &c., &c.

NOTE II. - This report will be made by District Commanders on the 14th and 28th of each month, from the last report of Stations received at that date.  It will be sent from each Station or Freedmen's Camp by the officer in charge thereof, in season for the District Report to be made out as directed above.  The Column of Remarks, in addition [[illegible]] the Officer in Charge of Station, will [[illegible]] any suggestions or remarks of the District Commander.
