At Minot the soil is less rich & black vegetation shows greater aridity. Still most of the Jamestown, Leeds + Bottineau species occur including the stream timber along the river & in side gulches. Psoralea aescalenta and [[Andropoque?]] appear for the first time this trip on a sheltered SW slope.

A taxidermist here tells me there are no prairie dogs on this side the Mo. R. but says they begin just across it. He says there are a few Kit foxes here.
The country is dry & grains & flax are small.
Citilles richardsoni is common.

[[underlined]] July 18 [[/underlined]] - Reached Valley City at daylight & waited till 7:35 [[overwritten]] 7:25 [[/overwritten]] for the train to Bismarck. Found beautiful wooden bottoms & parks in & around town. Hackberry is common, the first seen this trip. 
Eleagnus is also common & must reach its eastern limit here.
Reached Bismarck at 11:30 AM. & went to Northwest Hotel.
