Sept. 7,1917.

rain interferred with our regular assignments today so loafing was no small worry to a lot of the boys. Fatigue duty is distastful at best and as we are not regularly stationed at this Island it is not strictly according to rules that we should be obliged to do police or guard duty. As it happens, however, the force here is small and the quartermasters' department is very harassed so we must pitch in, if for no other reason than to make us forget [[strikethrough]] ourself [[/strikethrough]] the hardship of trying to kill time. I thought I was going to get off to go over to visit relatives in N.Y. over Sunday, but notice was posted today that I am among those assigned to guard duty. That'll be a new experience to me all right. Imagine guarding the Statue of Liberty. Who would have thought such a thing?
