Ugh! Two planes just came down a few hours ago with one killed and another hurt a bit. What a damper that places over your spirits, especially since the man that's "gone West" just joined the 28th Squadron this very morning. Major Bourne was pretty rumpled up over the happening and lifted the C.B. that he had placed us under for the week. I heartily hope we won't hear ^[[about,]] or see, so many of these things because they [[underline]] do [[/underline]] cast a blanket over our feelings. Mathews tried to throw a loop at 4500' and must have fainted or pulled it out too quickly. The plane is said to have crumpled under the enormous pressure of his plunge. The other fellow tried to land near him and aid, but he had something happen for he came down on a wing and smashed up. I was just going down the line to a bombing lecture when I saw the crowd
