clean. Drinking water was at a premium; it was fed to patients whose temperature was six degrees above normal. I asked for my shaving materials and a messenger to carry a note to my squadron office; both were denied.

The next morning breakfast consisted of a dish of unsweetened grapenuts, the same abominable coffee, and two slices of bread. The ward master, after carrying back the dishes, brought out two brooms and a mop and told the men in his care to clean the place out so that it would look nice when the Lieutenant came around. The doctor came in at 10 o'clock, passed from bed to bed with no more than a cursory examination and went out. Through the day we read or wrote. Some played cards. Coughing was tremendous and it is easy to understand when you hear a measle patient talk and cough
