soon land than a full tanked machine was waiting for me - so by the end of a fortnight I had 31 hours to my satisfaction. I learned to ride a machine and feel the "human" side of it; I had much actual [[underline]] fun [[/underline]]and excitement performing the prescribed tests.  

The so-called tests were part of the Royal Flying Corps programme. Each American squadron has an English Liaison Officer who supervises the flying and keeps the training up to the mark in British methods. So instead of simply "straight" flying such as the American fields still maintain, we underwent a good course that was interesting the more for these tests.

The Curtiss model we trained in was not one that would climb very far up. Ten thousand feet was a good maximum height and to attain that altitude meant a good machine, a good engine, and exceptional atmosphere. We were asked to go up 8000 feet. The machine I had was new and climbed steadily for 6000 feet at an
