and an unlooked-for opening presented itself to me in the latter position. I went to work at once to get my flight straightened out preparatory to leaving the 15th of March and I was in a fair way of being elevated in rank within a short time if all went as it might have done.

But it didn't choose to behave as it might have done. Out of a clear Texas day came the special order from Washington for Lieuts. Brooks and ^[[Bill]] Braid to "report at once to the Commanding General, Port of Embarkation, Hoboken N.J., prepared for extended overseas duty."
