Lieutenants, a number of navy ensigns including one or two navy fliers, a theatrical manager, a couple of high English officers, a Frenchman with ^[[strange]] to tell, moustachios like Kaiser Bill's, one English lady (who was the only woman aboard ship besides a mere handful of stewardesses), and a smattering of other civilians. It was, and is, a quiet group. It generally appears at breakfast around 9:00 A.M.; one or two of its members have broth in the library at 12:00; it assembles again at 1:00 for luncheon, has tea in the library at 3:30, and dines at 7:00. Betweenwhiles the deck or the staterooms are the "places d'habitations"(?) The only time one can be sure of the whole group is at the regular meal hours. The major-general can invariably be seen poring over a volume through his tortoise-shell goggles, [[strikethrough]]  curl[[/strikethrough]] ^[[curled]] up with his blouse half open for comfort, in a corner of the library. Major Rand is either walking the deck or reading the
