Another, this from the lines, was occasioned by the heavy rain and fog.  A colonel approaching a trench was halted and properly advanced to be recognized.  After recognition the sentry gave his present-arms salute and smiling through the murk said, "Welcome to our mist, Sir."
Some of the inspecting officers who have bad [[digestion?]] seem to delight in lying in wait to grab a gun away.  Most of these trials are unsuccessful and only reflect discredit on the office -- at a post like this one at any rate.  Nearer the lines I imagine our sentries will be more prone to shoot first and question afterwards because Fritz is clever in assuming disguises.
This guard duty is a sleepy job but it has its recompense for the enlisted men who gets the next 24 hrs. without fatigue.  But being only a poor young officer I suppose I'll be working at something else tomorrow.
