Most of our planes are out of commission on account of waiting for supplies to replace broken tail skids and chipped propellers. The ground, while level ^[[thanks to the Engineers,]] is very hard (rock is found 8 inches beneath the surface, and rain has packed the dirt) and consequently landings are detrimental with the present tail skids. Two of our mechanics have been struck by propellers during the starting of the motors, due to carbonized cylinders - indicating that the motors are not exactly brand new. We are trying to get at the bottom of the affair - are these [[underline]] new [[/underline]] machines after all?

The Americans are making themselves known in the present great German Drive on Paris. American dispatches contain daily news of exploits of Marines and doughboys about Chateau Thierry. that is saying nothing about the all American front "Northwest of Toul" either.

It seems that today our squadron was incorporated into the lst Army D.E.F. So we are indeed in on the ground floor. And furthermore
