Putnam and I were in the air and heading up and out towards Pont a Mousson.
A nasty reglage machine had been directing artillery fire against Pompey and Dieulouard for a few days and this was, we supposed, the culprit at it again.
Captain Bridgeman appeared from nowhere in particular and joined our little party. We were certainly after that particular Hun for upon spying him below ^[[us]] heading up the Moselle we gave chase and went half way to Metz.
The wily Bosche saw us coming and in addition our presence was well advertised by those "woof! woof!! woofs!!!" Putnam dived, shooting as he went. I dived at his left, shooting as I went. I saw my tracers going true and assume some of my shots went into the enemy's fuselage or wings, but ^[[again a]] jammed gun
