July 12. Nothing has happened of note during the past few days. My engine developed a disquieting knock and its vibration was suggestive of a threat to shake my Spad to pieces so I went over it with the mechanics and found enough to order a new power plant installed. As the Engineering Officer of the squadron remarked, "You might fly a lot of hours with the bus but any ill moment a connecting rod might go through the crank case and quit with a jiffy's notice" It [[underline]] would [[/underline]] be rather inconvenient to have that happen while chasing a Bosche on a glide behind his own lines. The 180 HP Hispano Suiza is a powerful brute and it fits into the Spad with a snugness that suggests the care in its design.
