We gained 4500 meters and headed across the lines towards Metz.  Just after [[strikethrough]] passing [[/strikethrough]] ^[[crossing]] the trenches the Salmson climbed into a cloud; I went in also and upon emerging I almost collided with the Salmson.  #9 was still at the left.
Our trio was [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] heavily archied behind Pont-à-Mousson and over a hundred black rings broke about us.  We headed on up the Moselle, circled Metz, were archied heavily again, [[underlined]] and [[/underlined]] headed still further into Germany! And me with a low gas tank and a' tremblin' on that account if not because of the second overdose of archies between Metz and Conflans -- some 40 kilometers into Hunland and the wind against us on the return trip!!!!!

It was at this point beyond Metz that #9 disappeared. We kept entering, and diving down out of, the mist, and through the cloud of black dots I noted
