There is no percentage in our so called "protection" anyway.  The Salmson could outclimb and outspeed me at high altitude.  (and although one Robinson has been lost ^[[(2nd of July, Schilling & Mayes 91st)]], another had the observer shot ^[[(Hirth & Van Heuvel 91st)]] through the heart and the pilot wounded in the head, it would have meant a couple more machines if they'd have been protected; for the Germans always attack such a convoy in overwhelming numbers and it is only a waste of machines; furthermore a Salmson discovering the presence of the enemy can get away every time.
When the German planes came over our lines they came singly and if
