We asked confirmation on the Bosche but after two trips to that region of the trenches got no more satisfaction than that a Lieutenant had heard the fight [[abart?]] the clouds and had seen [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] two German planes come down at the stated time and place. The crash was not seen however. It is all hills in the sector and we've already had several instances of our victories going to pot because no one was dependable enough to affirm the combat. We do it from the air for ourselves but it must be confirmed from a ground observer, or by two other parties in the air. Putnam congratulated me and told me his gun had jammed just as he was about to fire at his Bosche; he did a reversement and then Mr. Bosche came at me as I was recovering from my crack at his friend.
