Dear Mr. Hathaway:

Your very charming letter of March 30 was duly received by me this morning, with the pamphlet published by Eugene GLAENZER.

Let me tell you how much I appreciate your comments on "Merchants of Art", and I am happy to know that it held your attention - though in all modesty I do think you have ^[[been]] over generous with your compliments.

I am sorry indeed that our two mutual friends, Francis Taylor and Preston Remington could not have seen it in print, though I was able to show part of the manuscript to the former and it was thanks to his encouragement that I went ahead with it.

As to the marble statue, the "Wrapped Virgin" given to Bernini, I am disappointed to have to admit that I have no recollection of it whatsoever. It is even before my time... and I never knew Glaenzer's 21st Street installation. I am at a loss to know what to suggest. As I told you over the telephone, I am under the impression that Glaenzer had made some arrangements with the then living Raoul Heilbronner who did have a great many stones of all types - for which he evidently found an outlet in New York. But even if my surmise were correct, I do not see how fruitful research along these lines could be.. Auctions of Heilbronner's inventory were held in Paris after World War I - as he had remained a German national -but the statue - should it have come from him - was evidently in New York long before that date.....

I am sorry to be such a failure but, be this as it may, I am happy it gave me an opportunity to hear from you.

With renewed appreciation of your nice lines, and with personal regards,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman

P.S. Bt same mail I am returning to you the precious pamphlet.
