Dear Mr. Nichols

This morning's mail brings me a letter from our friend Boris Lovet-Lorski, whom I had posted about our conversation. It is full of appreciation for your kind efforts and he doesn't hide from me how anxious he is to be represented in the Metropolitan Museum by "Ariadne" - as this work shows an entirely different side of his talent than a portrait bust. Being such a great admirer of him, I certainly feel that "Ariadne" would be a great addition, in its free conception, beautiful technique and its precious "natière".

In this respect Lovet-Lorski writes that his "Ariadne" is "taille directe" in rose of Milan marble, and that it is an original, without copies - outside of a small version in black marble.

Now as regards the price of his sculpture, you probably know the figure which was put on the entry tag, but without being able or wanting to commit the artist, and in view of his keen desire to see this lovely sculpture remain at the Metropolitan, I feel personally convinced that we could come to an understanding, should the Committee on Purchases find that it hasn't the means to spend quite that amount of money. I want you to realize that I shall spare no efforts along those lines, and that if you feel I can help in any way, I
