The well known lithographer Raffet was a member of the scientific expedition, organized in 1837 by Prince Anatole Demidoff to explore the little known region of Southern Russia, the first of several trips he was to undertake with the prince. Raffet's ethnologically accurate studies served as notes for his lithographic illustrations of Demidoff's "Voyage Dans la Russie Meridionale et La Crimée" (Paris, 1840 and later editions). This group of brilliant sketches vividly evoke the exotic scenes of the Crimea, and give evidence of Raffet's great gifts as a draughtsman.
