This volume covers the nine families embraced in the [[underlined]] Fulicariae [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] Alectorides, [[/underlined]] of which the British Museum collection contained [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] over three thousand specimens, referable to 252 or more species.  Two hundred and ninety-three species and subspecies are recognised, accompanied by descriptions, synonymy, and tables [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] showing number of specimens of each species with their localities, etc., in the British Museum.  The following generic term is proposed:  [[underlined]] Heterotetrax [[/underlined]] for [[underlined]] Heterotis, [[/underlined]] preoccupied in Fishes).  [[underlined]] Rallus aequatoridis, Limnopardalus vigilantis, Aramides gutturalis, Porzana galapagoensis, Corethrura reichenovi, [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] Grus-lilfordi [[/underlined]] are here named as new.
