explanation may favor some modification of the regulations, thereby rendering them more satisfactory to all concerned and especially to those who invoke our aid in the identification of specimens. I attach particular importance to the latter, for upon the co-öperation of our correspondents very much of our success depends; and I have very good reason to know that a strict application of the regulations as now in force is not satisfactory to them, will alienate many of them, will deprive the Museum of their interest and good will, and, of course, their [[strikethrough]] co- [[/strikethrough]]coöperation also.

A very important factor in the present case which, since you have not in any way referred to it, perhaps you may not have understood, or at least overlooked, is the circumstance that the material received for identification falls into two very
