such material when returned to the Department for endorsement do not, unless my memory is very much at fault, have the blank for data for reply attached, as in the case of accession cards pertaining to material received direct by the Museum and, together with the letters relating thereto, referred to the Department; thus implying that the distinction which I have alluded to was recognized in the Registrar's and Correspondence Divisions. I may be wrong in this impression, but certainly this is the way the matter has appeared to me.

The other category comprises specimens not addressed to me, but sent either to the "Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution" or [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] addressed in some general way, the papers (including letters) coming to me from the Registrar's and Correspondence Division [[underlined]] instead of the reverse [[/underlined]], as in the case of the other class.
