offshore & but for Capt with his face mask & [[?short]] with enabled him to dive (reach bottom) we would have been out of luck.  He brought several buckets full of coral rock ashore, which we cracked up to salvage quite a number of specimens, shrimps, crabs, and worms, and a few amphipod,in fact everything was few in number.  Nevertheless they constituted a record or what might be expected from the other reefs.  This is a relatively inaccessible id. because of many dangerous reefs.  This id. is supposed to have more wrecks strewn about it than any other West Ind. or Caribbean Id.  [[?]] man told us yesterday that there had been none since 1927.  Reefs at N. & extreme southern points of island too far from our reasonable safe landing on beach to visit or collect by motor boat & that is why we undertook this walk.  Got back at about 2 (1:45 p.m.) for late lunch.  Al who stayed aboard to care for his plant coll's of yesterday ate a little ahead of us.  We were tired after the six miles and did little else rest of afternoon beyond bedding down specimens.  Turned in early for early rise for morrow.
