We had hooped to get off early this morning
[[underline]] April 13 1956 (Friday) [[/underline]] after dropping Miguel who was to take plane back to Antigua for hospital treatment, and possible skin grafting injured little finger. But we took cook ashore for some purchases (vegetables) also, & as we were going off dock got word from customs house that resident administrator wanted to greet us (over phone it proved but he did invite us up for drinks. Could not accept however. Also visited bookstore & got copies of first three readers used in schools. All these kids can read and write amazingly well. / Originall was our intention of going to St. Barts and St. Martin but todays wind was from South & to take advantage of it Capt suggested we go direct to Virgin Gorda ("Fat Virgin") & so we did. But on way passed over Saba Bank on which we made several dredge hauls of 8 [[tons?]]. These were made rather late in day & so we hung around till dark. Its a very long & large bank), & put over electric light got a number of interesting things (many [[Dulobates?]]); gorgonians [[strikethrough]]a ?[[/strikethrough]] from dredge haul.

ardent shell student, who is now a curator of marina invertebrates at the Calif. Acad. Sciences. Is also a fraternity brother of mine [[Sty?]] Ep. // told me the shocking news that lot of material that they got from U.Calif. had gone bad, and lot of Ritter [[?]] type were thrown away. I tried to get that stuff, but Acad beat me to it and now its gone to pot!!! And I remember telling Hanna, if you people can't keep alcohol up to let us have it. So valuable collections get lost. I remember when I packed up Calif stuff, I asked for Acad stuff. Oh! no they would care for it =
