Point-à-Pitre is supposed to be named for Pieters, a staunch Dutch seaman who landed in 1654. Its site would certainly be a sailors choice compared to Basse-Terre; well protected good docks, ^[[yacht]] clubhouse & wharf in sheltered cove./ Mitchell says it "seemed a flat colorless place, rows of shuttered houses drab & inhospitable in the hot sunshine.  Nor was it very clean.
