Sir

I understand the colored school house is done. I want the school to open on the 1st of Oct.

I will send a colored teacher (female) and see that her salary is paid, if the people will pay her board thisyear and the other expenses of the school.

Will you be kind enough to let some of the trustees know this fact. I wish them to informe me how she, the teacher, can best reach Nottingham and where they will meet her, if they want her to come. Please reply to this very soon & oblige.

Yours truly

We will employ [[underlined]] Miss Swan [[/underlined]] at Port Tobacco, but I think will not be able to give but $18.00 per month. Please inform me if she is willing to teach for that, if so she can commence Oct. 1st, she must keep a full school.

Also if [[underlined]] Davis [[/underlined]] wishes to continue and has a good school and you think best we will keep him. I would like the school go on without vacation.

I shall be glad for [[underlined]] Mardall [[/underlined]] to open a school in that church, but we cannot pay him at prsent, he is not much of a scholar. We will employ Miss [[underlined]] Haviland [[/underlined]] I think when the time comes; unless they have made great progress since we were

there, the Benedict house will not be done by the 15th. We must end that Newport house some way, the lumber cannot stay in that shape another winter. You did not write about deeds of land.

I had expected that the County Commissioner would open two schools at the [[?Bang]] farm this year, but I have been told today, as Mr [[underlined]] Godding [[/underlined]] wrote you, that Congress money cannot probably be used to pay teachers. I hope this is not the case, and that you will be employed by the County board. If not I cannot at present offer you a position under the Bureau. I may be able so to do after a while, but cannot now make any promise. We are sending out some teacher, but other more ready places where the people will pay the board of teacher must be supplied first.

Very Respectfully Yours
