The amount expended by the Bureau for these buildings has been included as obtained from the Disbursing Officer in total amount given in tabular report. It is about twenty-five thousand dollars ($25000).

The amount paid by the freedmen for school sites and houses is probably about twelve thousand dollars ($12.000).

The school boards in West Virginia have paid for sites and houses probably three thousand dollars ($3000).

I have a list of seventy school houses erected or in process of erection in Counties formerly under jurisdiction of the Assistant Commissioner of Maryland and Delaware. I do not know how many of these buildings have been commenced or completed this year.

High, Normal and Theological Schools.

Two high schools numbering one hundred and thirty nine scholars are reported in Upper Maryland, and two numbering seventy four scholars in Delaware.

The five schools in the District of Columbia and one in West Virginia, numbering two hundred and fifty nine scholars with an average attendance of one hundred and ninety eight, I have included in the tabular statement.

For a more extended account of these schools I respectfully refer you to my monthly report for January. Some account of the closing exercises of the Normal and Preparatory Department of Howard University is given in my June report. I enclose herewith a very full report from Dr. Tumey.

Industrial schools.

I can only report the number of these schools and their scholars, in Upper Maryland and Delaware. I have no other information in regard to them.

The seven schools in the District of Columbia have all been in this city except the one at Freedmen's Village, and all in buildings furnished by the Bureau. The women at Freedmens Village have been furnished with quarters and rations; rations have also been given to some of the other women. All the schools have been furnished with fuel. The material used in four schools has been furnished by the Bureau; the other three schools have received part material from the Bureau and part from friends and societies in this city and at the North. In four of the schools the women (many of whom are old and dependent) have been paid by piece for their work a part of the time. Most of the garments have been given through the Local Superintendent to the destitute of these cities. The women and children have been instructed in sewing and mending, and some in cutting and making; also in reading, writing, arithmetic and general house work. Quite a number have found service places through these schools

Number of Industrial Schools seven (7)
Average monthly attendance for six months 497.
Number of garments made 23.447.
Amount paid for cutting and making $7.547.43.

This sum paid by the Bureau for making garments and for material has been reckoned in the total amount paid by the Bureau for school in this Department.
