Dear Sir:

Genl [[underlined]] Whittlesey [[/underlined]] is not disposed to grant transportation to Miss [[underlined]] Howell [[/underlined]] to Va., and I don't think it is quite the thing. It will not do to send teachers for a month or two. I told Miss H., or wrote, that she had best not go to St. Mary's for a short time. Her school will fill up after the holidays.

I cannot attend to distributing the boxes until after returning from the North. I shall try to see you in passing through Phila.

[[underlined]] Marshall [[/underlined]] is teaching near Newburg. [[underlined]] John Cajoy [[/underlined]] is at Leonardtown.

Very Respectfully, Yours

Dear Sir:

I will send those deeds with the letter to you. They are all correct. One wants now to be recorded. I hope to be able in the Spring to give you lumber for houses on these lots, but cannot now promise. I shall visit Centreville before that time, and will then tell the people what we can do.

Very Respectfully, Yours

Dear Sir:

I believe a deed has already been given of the land. That was our understanding, before the house was put up, and I was wanting a copy of the same. Am I mistaken?

I have consulted with Genl. [[underlined]] Howard [[/underlined]] and think we shall close the whole matter, and pay you the $150.00. I will write you in a few days, as soon as I return from the North.

Very Respectfully, Yours

P.S. That is a smart girl and she has had a good deal of experience in teaching. I don't know where we can find a better colored teacher now. They are hard to find.

Miss:

I want you to get the people together and have them organize themselves into a School Association for the support of the school; and select five (5) of their best men to hold the school property, and send me their names. If they will take hold and support the school well, I think an arrangement will be made to pay the debt on the house and deed it to them.

Let me know what you do.

Very Respectfully, Yours

Dear Sir:

In the absence of Mr. [[underlined]] Kimball, [[/underlined]] I reply to yours of the 22d inst. Mr. [[underlined]] James [[/underlined]] has made no complaints of any kind, except that his school was small. I was not aware that he was to be withdrawn, but I presume he will have to be, unless he has a larger attendance, because the Societies are not willing to pay teachers salaries whose schools number less than thirty pupils.

Very Respectfully, Yours
J. Q. Crosby
Clerk.
