But you know what we want and expect, that when the account is sent on, it will have monthly reports in this office to sustain it.

You will probably receive vouchers and money on Monday.

I have the honor to present the following report of the work of Education in this Department for the months of October, November and December 1868.

In December two (2) Industrial schools were reported numbering one hundred and twenty-three (123) scholars.

In December nine (9) high or Normal schools were reported numbering four hundred and thirty-seven (437) scholars.

In October the number of Schools reported in the District of Columbia was sixty-one (61), with thirty-two hundred and seventy (3270) scholars.  In December the number of schools reported in the district was sixty-three (63) with thirty-three hundred and thirty-two (3332) scholars, showing an increase of only two schools and sixty-two scholars.  The term here commenced with nearly a full number of schools, there not being the same cause for small beginnings as in some other parts of the Department.  Houses were ready and teachers to occupy them.  The December report shows a decrease of four (4) schools, and three hundred and twenty-one (321) scholars as compaired with the December report for 1867.
