term, to pay the rent on through the vacation, but where schools only continued a few months and rent was charged through vacation, he did not intend to pay.

I think you cannot charge for [[underlined]] Nelson [[/underlined]] school during vacation as he begun March 15th. [[underlined]] Keys [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] Lovett [[/underlined]] kept one school between them, most of the time, from middle of January. [[underlined]] Marshall [[/underlined]] from Dec., but closed before the end of term. I don't know if you can charge for both. Might make one charge for the two, [[underlined]] Marshall [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] Lovett. [[/underlined]]

Very Respectfully Yours
Superintendent of Education.

Friend:

Rental account in Virginia must be approved by Supt. Manly at Richmond. Are not the buildings at Harper's Ferry still the property of the Government? They are until they get your deed. In what building does Miss Healy teach? I did not expect the Govt. would be called upon to help the Martinsburg school. Their funds ought to be sufficient.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
Superintendent of Education.

In order to approve your rental account, I need the reports. You already know this. Shall I have these or return the account to you. I wish to close my own report for July.

Very Respectfully, Yours,

Dear Sir:

I find the books to [[underlined]] Bassett [[/underlined]] have not been sent. I therefore have a bill against him only for 1 Map of U.S. $3.00. The other items are correct. I think the first bill sent for against [[underlined]] Lewis [[/underlined]] was $15.62/100. I sent for another bill against him $6.54/100. I have some letters from the men saying they will pay for books ordered from me. If they send money by mail, it will be at their own risk. It is much better to have you send the money by check. I have just got a package of books from Adam's Express, and asked [[underlined]] Mr. Ballantyne [[/underlined]] to ward them to Jones. [[underlined]] Mr. B. [[/underlined]] is Bookseller here. You cannot send by Express to any school in Maryland.

It would be far better to send from book sellers who sell at just as fair rate and who will take the trouble to see that the books [[space]] the person. I do not know who refused to send books from Washington and Baltimore. I gave you the name of good men in both places.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
Superintendent of Education.
