trustee of that place objected to his returning on account of some trouble last year in relation to his board. I offered to locate him at Newburg, in the same County, but he got discouraged before reaching the place, and returned. I then sent him to the school at Forestville, which is only a few miles distant from this City where I suppose he now is.

Dear Sir:

You stated in letter of the 7th ult. that you would accept [[underlined]] Somers, [[/underlined]] (whose letter is enclosed) as a teacher, and pay his fare to Maryland. Hope you will do so now. He is the man who I supposed went to Dames Quarter, of whom I wrote yesterday and has been furnished with instructions how to reach the place.

Dear Sir:

I learn from Mrs. [[underlined]] Lowell [[/underlined]] (Secretary of a [[underlined]] N. Y. Society, [[/underlined]]) that Miss James, whom they sent out to take charge of your school nearly a month ago, has not commenced teaching yet, because the school-room was not ready: has no chimney nor stove. Now unless the colored people of your place take interest enough in the school to have this matter attended to at once, we shall remove Miss [[underlines]] Jones [[/underlined]] and send her to a place where the people better appreciate these advantages. You had better call a school meeting without delay and consider this. Please write me what you decide upon.

Very Respectfully, Yours,

Miss:

Did you receive the register and blanks I sent you? I learn from Mrs. [[underlined]] Lowell [[/underlined]] that your school room is not in a habitable condition, and that you have not yet commenced teaching. I have just written to [[underlined]] Benjamin Davis [[/underlined]] that the people must put the house in order at once, or we must transfer you to another place. Hope you will do what you can to start them up. Please write me without delay.
